The Harris Families of Kings County, Nova Scotia

NOTE November 2018: I haven't worked on these Harris pages in quite some time. I have other information that should be added, which I hope to get to, soon. If you have anything you think should be added, any corrections, or any questions, please contacct me.

Seven HARRIS men were named among the original grantees at Horton, Kings County, Nova Scotia, in 1761. All are known to be descendants of James HARRIS [ca 1642 - 1714], and before coming to Nova Scotia were principally associated with Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, and Connecticut (Saybrook, Middlesex Co., and New London and Colchester, New London Co.). There are a number of references to this family, including:

- I. E. Bill (1880), Fifty years with the Baptist ministers and churches of the Maritime provinces of Canada. Barnes & Co. (Saint John, New Brunswick)

- E. G. Denison (1963), Denison genealogy: ancestors and descendants of Captain George Denison. Pequot Press (Stonington, CT).

- A. W. H. Eaton (1910), The history of Kings County, Nova Scotia. Salem Press (Salem, MA).

- G. I. Harris (2000), James and Sarah (Eliot?) Harris of Boston and New London. New England Historical and Genealogical Register 154:3-32.

- Registers of the marriages, births and deaths in the townships of Horton, Aylesford, and Cornwallis, Kings County, Nova Scotia. [A printed copy prepared and distributed by the Family History Committee of the Kings Historical Society 1996; available on microfilm at the Archives in Halifax]

- N. H. Morgan (1878), A history of James Harris of New London, Conn. and his descendants from 1640 to 1878. Case, Lockwood & Brainard Co. (Hartford, CT).

- J. S. Rogers (1902), James Rogers of New London, Connecticut and his descendants. Self-published (Boston, MA).

I have used the above references, supplemented by data from land petitions, deeds, probates, vital records, cemetery records, and various internet contacts, to prepare the following list of the descendants of James HARRIS. Because G. I. Harris' report in "The Register" includes the newest research on the family, I have used information from that publication as my basis. Differences between Harris (2000) and other reports are noted, and Canadian records are used to extend the families beyond those noted in Harris (2000).

Individuals known to have been in Nova Scotia or New Brunswick begin to show up in the Third Generation.

I have made little effort to list names and determine relationships beyond the Seventh Generation. For those interested in more recent Kings County Harrises, the cemetery records compiled by the Kings Historical Society [they have been available on disk; don't know if they still are] are full of additional names and dates. Some of them, as well as "unlinked" names from the Kings County township books, are included at the bottom of this page.

I have additional HARRIS records that I haven't been able to definitely put in the genealogy below, or to fairly definitely assign to this particular Harris line. If you have names you are interested in before about 1850, check the Harris Family Bibliography (linked above). It might have something of interest.

FIRST GENERATION

1.James HARRIS was probably born in Connecticut in the early 1640s. His ancestry is unknown. He is known to have lived in Boston, Suffolk County, MA, and in New London, New London Co., CT. He died on 9 June 1714, probably at the home of his son James HARRIS in Mohegan (now, Montville), New London Co., CT.
Previous studies of James HARRIS have concluded that his wife was Sarah DENISON. Harris (2000) presents a compelling discussion that his wife was probably
Sarah ELIOT, dau. of Jacob ELIOT and Margery ____. She was baptized at the First Church of Boston on 5 Dec 1647, when she was about six days old. They were married say 1666 or 1667 (record not found). She was alive when James died in 1714, living in New London, CT.
There is much more information on James HARRIS is Harris (2000) and Morgan (1878) - citations given above.

SECOND GENERATION

Children of James HARRIS (1) and Sarah ELIOT [?] were:

2-Sarah HARRIS b. 2 Mar 1667/8 Boston; baptized at Old South Church, Boston, MA 12 Aug 1683. No definite records after that date (but Harris 2000 includes some probable data).

3-Mary HARRIS b. ca June 1669 Boston; d. Boston 25 Sep 1670, aged 15 months.

+4-James HARRIS b. Boston, Suffolk Co., MA, 4 Apr 1673. He died 10 Feb 1757 Colchester, New London Co., CT. He married 1st, say 1696, Sarah ROGERS, dau. of Samuel ROGERS and Mary STANTON of New London Co., CT. Sarah was born in New London, CT, 9 Aug 1676, and died 13 Nov 1748. James HARRIS married 2nd ca 1749 (intent published 27 Aug 1749) Sarah [HARRIS] JACKSON, widow of Samuel JACKSON. This Sarah had been born in New London, CT, 1 Jan 1704/5; she died 9 Oct 1752.
James HARRIS and Sarah ROGERS had nine children [see Third Generation, below]. There is considerable information about James HARRIS in Harris (2000) and Morgan (1878).

5-Margaret HARRIS b. Boston 16 Jan 1674/5, but not baptized with the other children in 1683, and no further info; maybe died early?

6-Mary HARRIS b. Boston 3 Feb 1676/7 and baptized 12 Aug 1683, but she apparently died, because a third child was named Mary in 1686.

7-Deborah HARRIS baptized in Boston 12 Aug 1683; no further records.

8-Elizabeth HARRIS baptized with the other children in Boston 12 Aug 1683; no further records.

+9-Asaph [or Asa] HARRIS b. Boston, Suffolk Co., MA, 10 Nov 1680; he died Preston, New London Co., CT, 20 Aug 1715. He married the sister of his brother James' wife, Elizabeth [ROGERS] STANTON, 17 Mar 1709 in New London, CT. Elizabeth was the widow of Theophilus STANTON, with whom she had three children. She was born in New London, CT, 8 May 1673, and died 1753 or earlier.
Asaph HARRIS and Elizabeth ROGERS had four children [see Third Generation, below]. Harris (2000) and Morgan (1878) have more detail on the family of Asaph and Elizabeth.

10-Anna HARRIS b. 22 Apr 1682 Boston, and baptized (under the name "Hannah") 12 Aug 1683; no further records.

11-Ephraim HARRIS b. Boston 17 Dec 1684 and baptized 21 Dec 1684; another child was named Ephraim in 1688, so this one must have died young.

12-Mary HARRIS b. 11 Oct 1686 and bapt. 17 Oct 1686 Boston; no further info.

13-Ephraim HARRIS b. 11 July 1688 and bapt. 15 July 1688 Boston. He was known to be alive in Connecticut as late as 1706.

THIRD GENERATION

CHILDREN of James HARRIS (4) and Sarah ROGERS:

+14-Sarah HARRIS b. 27 Sep 1697 in either Mohegan or Colchester, New London Co., CT; married ca 1717 Peletiah BLISS [born Norwich, CT 17 Nov 1697, died 1763]. She is last recorded in Colchester, CT in April 1742; her husband re-married ca 1743, so she apparently died 1742 or 1743. [NOTE: Morgan (1878) records John BROWN as another husband of Sarah HARRIS, but this has been disproved.]
Sarah HARRIS and Peletiah BLISS had ten children [see Fourth Generation, below].

+15-James HARRIS b. 26 Jan 1699 in New London Co., CT; died at Saybrook, CT, ca June 1780. He married 1st ca 1719 Ann GILBERT, dau of Samuel GILBERT and Mary ROGERS. [Ann GILBERT b. Hartford, CT, ca 1700.] He married 2nd ca Jan 1737 Mercy THATCHER, dau. of John THATCHER and Lydia GORHAM. [Mercy THATCHER b. 7 Feb 1703 Yarmouth, Barnstable Co., MA.].
James HARRIS had two children, one by each wife [see Fourth Generation, below]. Morgan (1878) has more information on him.

+16-Mary HARRIS b. 1 Nov 1702 New London Co., CT; d. 13 Mar 1761 Salisbury; Litchfield Co., CT. She married ca 1728 John HOLMES Jr. [John HOLMES Jr. born ca 1700 Stow, Middlesex Co., MA; d. Salisbury, CT, 19 Sep 1785]. They had three children [see Fourth Generation, below].

+17-Jonathan HARRIS b. 15 June 1705 New London Co., CT; d.Colchester, New London Co., CT, 12 Sep 1761. He had an apparently illegitimate child with Mary VIBBER in 1733, then married in New London, CT 28 Jul 1735 Rachel OTIS, dau. of Joseph OTIS and Dorothy THOMAS. [Rachel OTIS b. 1 Dec 1713; d. 21 Sep 1761.] Jonathan and Rachel had thirteen children [see Fourth Generation, below].
There is additional information on Jonathan HARRIS in Morgan (1878).

+19-Abigail HARRIS b. New London Co., CT 17 May 1711; died after 1753; married 12 Nov 1730 Samuel FOX Jr. [Samuel FOX b. ca. 1707, d. ca 1786; son of Samuel FOX and Margaret BRINTNAL.] They had eleven children [see Fourth Generation, below].

+20-Lebbeus HARRIS b. Mohegan [=Montville], New London Co., CT 11 Aug 1713; d. 1792 Horton, Kings Co., Nova Scotia. He married in New London, New London Co., CT on 20 Nov 1738 Alice RANSOM. [Alice RANSOM was the dau. of Robert RANSOM and Alice NEWTON, and was born in Colchester, New London Co., CT 6 Sep 1719. She apparently died between 1756 and 1758 in Connecticut, but I have no record.] Lebbeus married second in Stonington, CT, 30 March 1758 Eliphal [NOYES] PRENTICE, widow of Oliver PRENTICE. [Harris (2000) thought that the "Eliphal" HARRIS named as Lebbeus' wife in Nova Scotia in 1766 was really Alice RANSOM, but Frank C. Ripley (letter 10 Sept 2001) presents compelling evidence to the contrary, including the Harris-Prentice marriage record.]
Lebbeus, along with his brother Jonathan (17), received in 1738 several large tracts of land in CT, from their father, James HARRIS (4). In 1754 they received grants of land in Pennsylvania [from the Susquehannah Company], but apparently never lived there. He was a grantee at Horton, Nova Scotia in May 1761. He made at least one trip from Nova Scotia to Connecticut, in 1771 [with his sons Peleg and Lebbeus Jr., and his nephew James, according to Morgan (1878) to take care of some business relating to his father's estate], but lived in Nova Scotia from 1761 until his death in 1792. He represented Horton in the Legislature from 1761 to 1765.
Lebbeus and his first wife Alice had eight children [see Fourth Generation, below]

21-Alpheus HARRIS b. New London Co., CT 31 Aug 1716. He apparently died young.

+22- Delight HARRIS b. New London Co., CT 17 Oct 1720; d. 10 Mar 1783. She married in New London, 31 Jan 1745, Alpheus ROGERS, son of Daniel ROGERS and Grace WILLIAMS. [Alpheus ROGERS d. 12 Feb 1779.] They had six children [see Fourth Generation, below.]

CHILDREN OF ASAPH HARRIS (9) AND ELIZABETH [ROGERS] STANTON:

+23-Asa HARRIS b. 27 Nov 1709 Preston, New London Co., CT; died in Kings County, Nova Scotia 25 Jan 1762 after being caught in a snowstorm. He married ca. 1736 probably in Lyme, New London Co., CT, Anne [or, Anna] ELY, dau. of Daniel ELY and Mary Ann CHAMPLIN. [Anne ELY was b. 8 May 1716 New London Co., CT; after Asa's death, she returned to CT. She married 2nd Daniel CLEMENT and lived in Colchester, CT.]
Asa HARRIS lived in Preston, Saybrook and Lyme, CT, before moving to Horton, Kings County, Nova Scotia in 1761, where he was a grantee.
Asa HARRIS and Anne ELY had eleven children [see Fourth Generation, below].

+24-Annah HARRIS b. 27 Mar 1710/ll New London Co., CT; d. New London, CT, 7 May 1750. She married in New London 14 May 1739, Samuel BEEBE, as his second wife [He had been married previously to Sarah TUBBS.] Annah and Samuel had two children [see Fourth Generation, below].

+25-Ephraim HARRIS b. 28 Dec 1712 New London Co., CT; died Colchester, New London Co., CT, mid-1781. He married Hannah ____ . Ephraim and his son, Ephraim HARRIS Jr., were among the original grantees at Horton, Kings County, Nova Scotia, in 1761. Apparently, the family lived there only about a year [although Morgan (1878) says about 8 years - dating from 1754, which is incorrect], then returned to Connecticut where Ephraim settled near the Colchester-Lyme town line, New London Co., CT. There is more information on Ephraim and his descendants in Morgan (1878).
Ephraim and Hannah had twelve children [see Fourth Generation, below]

+26-Mercy HARRIS b. 14 Nov 1714 New London Co., CT; d. CT before Dec 1753. She married say 1737 Gideon WATERHOUSE [or WATROUS], son of Abraham WATERHOUSE and Hannah STARKIE. They had ten children [see Fourth Generation, below].

They lived in Salem until 1768, when they emigrated to Horton, Kings County, Nova Scotia. Other RATHBUNs were living in the area [apparently Ann's brother and family], and may have supplied the reason for James and Ann to move to Nova Scotia.
According to Morgan (1878), James HARRIS became a "successful trader in merchandise and lands." He revisited Connecticut in July 1771, and died in Horton, Nova Scotia 22 July 1838. Ann died 29 Aug 1828. Both are buried in the Lower Horton Cemetery.
